Rwanda's national airline, RwandAir is planning to start flights from Kigali to the United States of America using Accra, Ghana as a stopover, reports ch-aviation.

The destination is going to be either New York JFK or New York Newark and will be operated using the airline's yet-to-be-delivered Airbus A330-900s.

Having secured exemption authority and a foreign air carrier permit from the US Department of Transportation in May, RwandAir and Rwanda are now working on securing approvals from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

According to the airline's Chief Executive Officer, Yvonne Makolo, the inaugural flight is scheduled for June 2019, but might be pushed back if things didn't go as planned.

The use of Accra as a stopover is likely for both commercial and operational reasons. It is recalled that Kigali is located at almost 1,500 metres ASL just south of the equator.

With a fleet of 12 aircraft, RwandAir currently flies to 25 domestic and international destinations including Brussels, London, Abuja, Lagos, Mombasa, Lusaka, and Johannesburg O.R. Tambo.
