South Africa’s long weekends are something special. With public holidays scattered throughout the year, they create perfect pockets of time to escape the routine, recharge, and explore a bit of this incredible country without needing to take much leave.
Whether you’re after coastal vibes, wine country relaxation, or a touch of nature, there are destinations that suit every mood and group size.
As a proudly African hospitality group, BON Hotels has properties spread across key regions, making it easy to turn a few days off into a memorable stay. Here are some of the top long weekend destinations in South Africa, with a focus on areas where you can find BON Hotels properties offering that warm African hospitality combined with comfortable, reliable accommodation.
1. The KwaZulu-Natal North Coast and Zululand Area
KwaZulu-Natal delivers sunshine, beaches, and a laid-back coastal feel that’s ideal for a quick getaway. The northern parts, including Richards Bay and Empangeni, provide easy access to the Indian Ocean, lagoons, and nearby game reserves.
Richards Bay stands out for its waterfront setting and proximity to nature. You can spend your days on the beach, explore the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (a UNESCO site with incredible birdlife and hippos), or simply unwind with fresh seafood. It’s a great spot for families or couples wanting a mix of relaxation and light adventure.
Empangeni offers a quieter base, close enough to Richards Bay for day trips but with its own charm, including local markets and easy drives to Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park for game viewing if you fancy a safari element without a long haul.
For a comfortable stay in this region, consider:
BON Hotel Waterfront Richards Bay – right on the Tuzi Gazi Waterfront, perfect for harbour views and easy access to beaches.
BON Hotel Empangeni – centrally located, ideal for exploring the Zululand area.
Riverside Hotel and Royal Palm Hotel – both in KwaZulu-Natal, offering options from riverside calm to apartment-style convenience near Umhlanga if you extend your drive.
These spots make KZN a strong contender for a refreshing long weekend by the sea.
2. The North West – Rustenburg and the Magaliesberg Region
If you’re based around Gauteng or just want a nature-focused escape, Rustenburg and the surrounding North West province deliver. The area sits at the edge of the Magaliesberg mountains, with rolling hills, valleys, and easy access to Pilanesberg National Park.
A long weekend here often means game drives to spot the Big Five, hiking trails with panoramic views, or simply enjoying the tranquillity of the bushveld.
Pilanesberg is particularly convenient, as it’s malaria-free and offers excellent wildlife experiences without venturing too far north. Closer to town, you can visit the Rustenburg Nature Reserve or enjoy a picnic in the gardens.
Rustenburg itself has a relaxed pace, with good restaurants and shops, making it a practical base.
Stay at BON Hotel Rustenburg, which offers affordable tranquillity amidst gorgeous gardens and wildlife on the outskirts of town. It’s a solid choice for unwinding after a day out exploring.
This destination works brilliantly for those wanting a bush break without committing to a full safari lodge experience.
3. The Western Cape – Winelands and Ostrich Country
The Western Cape never disappoints for a long weekend, especially if you crave scenery, good food, and a slower pace. Durbanville sits in the heart of wine country, just outside Cape Town, while Oudtshoorn brings a completely different flavour.
Durbanville is all about vineyard views, wine tastings, and farm-to-table dining. You can hop between estates, enjoy picnics overlooking the vines, or drive to nearby Cape Town for a quick city fix. It’s close enough to the airport for easy access, yet feels worlds away from urban bustle.
Oudtshoorn, known as the ostrich capital, offers something unique: ostrich farms, the dramatic Cango Caves, meerkat encounters, and the semi-desert landscape of the Klein Karoo. It’s a refreshing change if you’re after wide-open spaces and quirky attractions.
Recommended stays include:
Queen’s Hotel by BON Hotels – luxury with a bygone-era charm in Oudtshoorn, blending history with modern comfort.
Majorca Apartments by BON Hotels – comfortable self-catering in Century City, great if you want a base closer to Cape Town activities.
4. Free State – Bloemfontein Central
Sometimes the best long weekends are the straightforward ones. Bloemfontein, in the heart of the Free State, offers a central location with a mix of history, culture, and green spaces. It’s often overlooked but perfect for a relaxed city break.
Wander through the Oliewenhuis Art Museum gardens, visit the Anglo-Boer War sites, or catch a Cheetahs rugby match if the timing aligns. The city has a friendly, unpretentious vibe, with good restaurants and easy drives to nearby game reserves like Soetdoring.
Base yourself at BON Hotel Bloemfontein Central, which brings retro charm to the business heart of the city while keeping things comfortable and convenient.
Long weekends in South Africa are about making the most of what we have right here: diverse landscapes, welcoming people, and that unmistakable African warmth. Whether you’re heading to the coast in KwaZulu-Natal, the bush in North West, the wines of the Western Cape, or the central plains of the Free State, there’s a BON Hotels property ready to welcome you.
