In recent times, media headlines about Kenya Airways have been dominated by one narrative: losses, restructuring, and financial struggles. It has become the default narrative, contributing to a one-dimensional perception shaped by limited context and an incomplete understanding of the airline's broader story.

This article, however, is not an attempt to downplay Kenya Airways' financial challenges. To be fair, Kenya Airways has faced significant headwinds in recent years, but those challenges did not occur in isolation, and certainly not without context. The airline’s recent challenges are well-documented and I acknowledge them. That said, it would be unfair to assess Kenya Airways' true value solely based on its financial performance.

The loss-making narrative might be valid and, in fact, true, but that's not the only narrative. There is certainly more to Kenya Airways than meets the eye. I know this because I have been there, literally, and my perspective has since changed. I would, therefore, like to focus on the airline's often overlooked resilience, strategic importance, and contributions to the African aviation ecosystem.

Recently, I was privileged to participate in the 2026 edition of the Kenya Airways Aviation Media Lab with several other aviation media personalities and digital content creators from across Africa.

Over five busy days, we stepped behind the scenes and explored the inner workings and the day-to-day operations of Kenya Airways. We engaged with Kenya Airways executives, industry leaders, strategic partners, and aviation professionals.

We also experienced regional aviation first-hand, and participated in conversations that shape the future of aviation, travel, tourism, and connectivity across Africa. The experience was both enlightening and deeply rewarding. I'd like to highlight a few vital facets of the airline that rarely make the headlines.

The Pride Centre

Even the most experienced aviation professional would find the Kenya Airways Pride Centre impressive. The facility left an immediate and lasting impression on me. It is one of the untold success stories of Kenya Airways. The environment is exceptionally clean, green, and serene, providing an atmosphere that is highly conducive for learning.

Surrounded by thoughtfully manicured walkways and well-maintained lawns, the Pride Centre's clean, serene environment minimizes distractions. This calm atmosphere allows students to focus fully on their training, fostering a professional mindset that inspires excellence.

Beyond aesthetics, the Kenya Airways Pride Centre is a leading provider of globally recognized aviation training programmes. Officially opened in 2007, the centre offers a diverse portfolio of programmes designed to prepare aspiring and experienced professionals for high flying careers across the aviation ecosystem.

Perhaps one of the least celebrated aspects of Kenya Airways is its contribution to human capital development. As a key pillar in the Kenya Airways talent development program, the Pride Centre has been instrumental in equipping aviation professionals with the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to operate at the highest industry standards.

Renowned for its commitment to excellence in aviation training and capacity development, the Kenya Airways Pride Centre has played a significant role in shaping thousands of aviation professionals who now serve in airlines across the continent and around the world.

If you are a frequent flyer across Africa and beyond, there is a strong possibility that one or more members of your flight crew received their professional training at the Pride Centre. If you have ever travelled on a Kenya Airways flight, the likelihood is even greater.

The Kenya Airways Pride Centre is the first aviation training facility on the continent and the seventh in the world to earn the prestigious Excellence Certification from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) for meeting Dangerous Goods Training requirements using a competency-based training and assessment (CBTA) approach. This reflects the centre's commitment to delivering training that meets the highest international standards.

From flight operations and cabin services to safety, security, and specialised aviation disciplines, the Centre equips learners with the practical knowledge and industry-relevant skills required to excel in a dynamic global industry.

The centre's state-of-the-art facilities, advanced training equipment, and world-class teaching aids create an immersive learning environment that fosters true experiential learning, ensuring that graduates are well prepared to meet the demands of modern aviation.

The MRO Facility

Touring the Kenya Airways Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility took me down memory lane to the day I took my very first flight. I remember gazing in awe and wondering how such a massive machine could defy the forces of nature - lifting off the ground against the wind and remaining airborne for hours despite the constant pull of gravity.

Many years later, standing inside one of Africa's leading MRO facilities, I found myself reconnecting with that same sense of wonder, but this time with a deeper understanding of the science, engineering, and expertise that make flight possible.

The MRO facility tour offered me far more than a glimpse into the technical side of aviation. It provided rare behind-the-scenes insights into the intricate systems, rigorous maintenance procedures, and highly skilled workforce that ensure aircraft operate safely and efficiently every day. It was a powerful reminder that every successful flight is supported by hours of meticulous work carried out behind the scenes.

From the Boeing 777 to turboprops and everything in between, the Kenya Airways MRO facility is a one-stop hub for aircraft maintenance. Equipped with advanced technology and staffed by highly trained and experienced professionals, the facility provides a wide range of maintenance services that help keep aircraft airworthy, reliable, and ready to connect people and businesses around the world.

The visit was truly enlightening and deepened my appreciation for the immense effort, expertise, and precision required to keep aircraft safe and airworthy. It also opened my eyes to the dedication of the engineers, technicians, and other aviation professionals whose work ensures that aircraft operate safely.

In particular, it was a fascinating experience touring a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner undergoing its first-ever C-check at one of the facility's dedicated hangars.

A C-check is a comprehensive maintenance inspection carried out every 18 to 24 months, or after a specified number of flight hours, depending on the aircraft type. The process requires the aircraft to be taken out of service for up to four weeks, allowing engineers and technicians to inspect, disassemble, repair, and overhaul critical systems and components.

Completing a single C-check can demand as many as 6,000 man-hours, highlighting the scale, complexity, and operational capacity of the Kenya Airways MRO facility. This is a story that deserves to be told more often.

The KQ Cargo Facility

The facility is massive. It is only when you stand inside the Kenya Airways Cargo facility that you begin to grasp the true scale of its operations. Stretching across approximately 136,000 square feet, the Kenya Airways Cargo facility left me in absolute awe. It was unlike anything I had seen before.

Beyond its sheer size, what stood out most was the remarkable order with which everything functioned. It is a carefully coordinated environment where efficiency, organisation, and precision are evident at every stage.

Every process appeared intentional, every movement purposeful. It was yet another reminder that there is far more to Kenya Airways than the headlines often suggest.

In many ways, the Kenya Airways Cargo facility tells its own stories - stories of efficiency, world-class organisation, and the trust placed in it by customers across the globe. It tells stories of excellence and streamlined processes, of thoroughness and meticulous planning, of coordinated efforts and unwavering adherence to standard operating procedures.

Above all, the KQ Cargo facility tells a story of countless people working with quiet professionalism and careful attention to detail to keep global commerce moving.

From its operational hub at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, KQ Cargo provides global air freight, e-commerce, and logistics services across the world, including Africa, Europe, Asia, the US, and the Middle East.

From reception to the ramp, cargo is handled with remarkable efficiency and under carefully controlled conditions. The facility features modern general warehousing alongside dedicated temperature-controlled cold rooms for perishables and pharmaceuticals.

In May 2023, KQ Cargo was awarded the Center of Excellence for Independent Validators (CEIV) Pharma certification by IATA for the KQ Pharma Facility. This certification formally endorsed Kenya Airways' sustained capacity to safely handle high-value, time-sensitive, and temperature-controlled transportation of pharmaceuticals.

Through a well-structured system, Kenya Airways' pharmaceutical product shipment complies with IATA Temperature Control Regulations and continues to adhere to international standards and best practices in cold chain and pharmaceutical movements. Not many facilities across the world have earned this certification. Yet, it remains another vital chapter of the airline's story that is largely untold.

About the Aviation Media Lab

The Aviation Media Lab is Kenya Airways' attempt to promote experiential storytelling. It is an immersive multi-day initiative that opens the doors of the aviation industry to international journalists, storytellers, and digital content creators.

In an industry often judged through headlines and financial reports, initiatives like the Aviation Media Lab provide journalists and content creators with the context needed to tell more balanced and informed stories.

Now in its fourth year, the initiative was designed to foster deeper understanding and informed storytelling. The programme offers participants exclusive behind-the-scenes access to Kenya Airways operations, facilities, and aviation executives, providing authentic insight into the airline, its people, its processes, and its real stories.

Expertly anchored by Henry Okatch, Head Media & Public Relations, Kenya Airways, this year's Aviation Media Lab was more than a learning program. Through active engagement, the programme evolved into a platform for honest conversations, fostering a shared commitment to informed, balanced, and impactful storytelling.

Closing Thoughts

An airline is more than its aircraft and the numbers on its balance sheet. Recent media headlines about Kenya Airways have largely focused on losses, financial woes, and restructuring. However, financial performance alone does not tell the complete story of the airline and its impact.

Beyond the headlines are engineers and technicians ensuring that aircraft remain airworthy, instructors shaping the next generation of aviation professionals, cargo teams keeping supply chains moving, and employees who continue to carry the Pride of Africa with quiet dedication.

As I departed Nairobi, I found myself thinking less about the narratives I had arrived with and more about the ones I had discovered along the way. Kenya Airways is not defined solely by its challenges. The untold stories of resilience, innovation, and human capital development deserve their place in the conversation too.
