Lufthansa to Resume Direct Flights From Munich to Johannesburg

After an 18-year hiatus, Lufthansa is set to return to Johannesburg, South Africa with scheduled direct flights from Munich, Germany.

The three-weekly service between Munich International Airport and O.R. Tambo International Airport will resume on 3 June, 2024, and will be operated by an ultra-modern Airbus A350-900 aircraft.

The resumption of Munich-Johannesburg services is coming barely a month after Lufthansa and South African Airways relaunched their codeshare agreement in August. The deal allows South African Airways customers to fly to Frankfurt and connect to a host of European destinations on Lufthansa.

Pending regulatory approval, South African Airways will also codeshare with Swiss Airlines, which also belongs to the Lufthansa Group. This will allow South African Airways customers to fly out of Johannesburg on Swiss to Zurich and onward to other European destinations on a single ticket.

Lufthansa previously served Johannesburg nonstop from Munich until 2005 when it axed the route and launched nonstop service between Frankfurt and Cape Town.
