Introduction
With rising passenger traffic to Uyo and the ambition to connect Akwa Ibom State to regional and international air corridors, the need for a new terminal at Victor Attah International Airport became evident. The old terminal, which was commissioned close to a decade ago, was beginning to strain under growing passenger demand, making the construction of a dedicated international terminal a logical next step in the airport's evolution.
I recently had the opportunity of travelling through the new terminal on the Ibom Air's inaugural scheduled international flight from Uyo to Accra. I experienced firsthand the terminal and its facilities from check-in to boarding and everything in-between.
So, what is it really like to travel through the Victor Attah International Airport's new terminal? Come with me as I walk you through my experience.
First Impressions
For my 12:00 pm flight, I arrived at the new terminal at Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo at 9:50 am. Ibom Air had moved its operations there just two weeks earlier, so this was my first opportunity to experience the facility. I intentionally arrived well ahead of departure, hoping to explore the terminal before checking in.

From the moment my taxi driver pulled up outside, I knew this wasn't going to be just another airport visit. The terminal building immediately caught my attention. Its sweeping, wave-like roof, generous canopies, expansive glass façade, and clean architectural lines create a contemporary yet inviting appearance.
What caught my eye most was the gracefully curved roofline, which gives the building a distinctive architectural identity. The extensive glazing allows natural light to flood the interior while giving the structure an open and airy feel.

The warm-toned cladding, striking diamond-patterned side façade, and the adjoining vibrant orange wall panels add character to the exterior. Together, these elements create a building that feels modern without appearing overly extravagant.
Standing outside, I paused for a few moments, simply taking it all in. The architecture sets this terminal apart from many regional airports in West Africa and raises your expectations before you even step inside.
Interior Ambience
Stepping into the new terminal for the first time, I was immediately struck by its remarkable sense of space. Before reaching the check-in hall, however, I had to pass through a preliminary security screening at the entrance. The process was quick and efficient, taking only a few moments to complete. The screening equipment appeared modern, and the security personnel carried out their duties professionally and courteously, making for a reassuring start to the journey.

Beyond the security checkpoint, the terminal truly begins to reveal itself. The check-in hall was bright, airy and wonderfully uncluttered. Soaring ceilings and floor-to-ceiling glass walls allow natural light to pour into the space, creating an environment that feels open and inviting rather than enclosed.
What impressed me most was the balance between form and function. The generous proportions of the hall, polished floors, clean architectural lines and restrained finishes combine to create an atmosphere that feels contemporary without being ostentatious. It's the kind of space that encourages you to slow down, look around and appreciate the thought that has gone into its design.

For a moment, it was easy to forget I was in a regional airport in Nigeria. Instead, the terminal conveyed the confidence and ambition of a facility designed to support the airport's growing international aspirations.
Modern Interior Design
If there was one design feature that truly captivated me, it was the ceiling.
It's not often that an airport's ceiling becomes a talking point, but the designers have turned it into one of the terminal's defining features. The steel trusses and lattice framework have been left deliberately visible—a hallmark of contemporary airport architecture that gives the space both character and a sense of scale. It was one of the first details that caught my eye when I stepped into the terminal, and I found myself looking up more than once just to admire it.

Adding to the visual appeal are the long, linear LED light fittings suspended from the steel framework at varying angles. Rather than simply illuminating the hall, they create rhythm and movement across the ceiling, giving the interior a subtle sense of drama without feeling excessive.
The interplay between the dark steel structure above and the crisp white soffit panels below creates a striking contrast that makes the entire space feel both modern and refined.

The generous ceiling height only enhances the experience. Combined with the abundance of natural light filtering through the expansive glass façade, the terminal feels open, airy, and remarkably spacious. At no point did the interior feel confined or overwhelming, despite the scale of the building.
For me, this is where the terminal's design succeeds most. It doesn't rely on lavish finishes or extravagant features to make an impression. Instead, it embraces clean lines, honest materials and thoughtful architectural detailing to create a space that feels contemporary, functional and worthy of an international airport.
Signage and Wayfinding
One of the quickest ways to judge an airport is by how easily it helps you find your way around. After all, no traveller wants to spend time searching for the check-in counters, boarding gates or restrooms. Thankfully, the new terminal at Victor Attah International Airport gets this right.
As I made my way through the terminal, I found the signage to be clear, consistent and easy to follow. Whether I was looking for the check-in area, security screening or other passenger facilities, the signs were positioned exactly where I expected them to be. At no point did I have to stop and wonder if I was heading in the right direction.

The design itself follows the internationally recognised airport wayfinding principles used at airports around the world. The golden-yellow signs, paired with bold black lettering and universally recognised pictograms, stand out brilliantly against the terminal's bright interior. Even from a distance, the information is easy to read, while the clear directional arrows guide passengers naturally from one point to the next.
What impressed me most was that the signage never drew attention to itself—and that's precisely what good airport wayfinding should do. It quietly does its job, allowing passengers to move confidently through the terminal without confusion or unnecessary stress.

For a newly commissioned international terminal, this level of attention to detail is encouraging. Effective wayfinding is often overlooked until it fails, but here it works exactly as it should. It's another indication that the designers considered not only how the terminal should look, but also how it should function for the people using it.
Check-in Experience
The check-in hall's contemporary design, open-plan layout, polished floors, and high ceilings create an environment that feels calm and uncluttered, even before passengers begin to queue. A long row of check-in counters stretches along one side of the hall, while neatly arranged retractable belt barriers help keep queues organised and orderly.

Since I was travelling on Ibom Air's inaugural international flight from Uyo to Accra, I proceeded to the airline's check-in counters, where I was welcomed by courteous and professional staff. Document verification and check-in process was handled efficiently, and before long, I had my boarding pass in my hand. There were no unnecessary delays or confusion—just a smooth, well-coordinated start to the journey.
One feature that particularly caught my attention was the presence of automated self-service check-in kiosks. Although I completed my check-in at the staffed counter, it was encouraging to see the airport investing in technology that gives passengers greater flexibility. As more airlines introduce self-service options, these kiosks have the potential to speed up the departure process and reduce queues during busy travel periods.

For a newly opened international terminal, the check-in experience struck a good balance between efficiency and hospitality. The facilities are modern, the layout is intuitive, and the staff I encountered ensured that the first formal step of the journey was as seamless as it should be.
Immigration Protocol
After checking in, I made my way to the immigration area on the second floor via the escalator. As I stepped into the hall, the first thing I noticed was how calm and organised everything felt.
The space was bright and generously proportioned, with natural light streaming through the expansive glass façade, complemented by recessed ceiling lighting that keeps the area evenly illuminated. The polished floors further enhance the feeling of cleanliness and order.

The immigration counters were neatly arranged in clearly marked booths with sleek glass partitions that give the area a modern, open feel without compromising privacy or security. I swiftly completed the immigration formalities at Booth 12. The officer was courteous, professional and respectful throughout the interaction, making what can sometimes be a stressful stage of international travel feel straightforward.
I also loved the orderly queuing system. Passengers moved through the area in a structured manner, with clear signage and well-defined lanes helping to minimise confusion. During my time there, the entire process appeared well coordinated, with officers maintaining a visible presence while ensuring passengers were attended to promptly.

Although immigration is rarely the highlight of any journey, it is often one of the most memorable parts when things can go wrong. Thankfully, that wasn't the case here. My experience was smooth, efficient and reassuring, leaving me with the impression of a terminal that is well prepared to handle international departures with professionalism and confidence.
Pre-boarding Security
One part of the terminal that genuinely impressed me was the pre-boarding security screening area. Security checkpoints are rarely remembered for positive reasons, but this one left a favourable impression. The space feels open and well organised, with excellent lighting and generous circulation areas that minimise the congestion so often associated with airport security.
The screening process itself was calm, orderly and professionally managed. My cabin baggage and personal belongings passed through the X-ray scanner before I proceeded through the walk-through metal detector. The security officers carried out both the primary and secondary screening with courtesy and professionalism, and the entire process was completed efficiently without feeling rushed or intrusive.

One detail worth mentioning—particularly in the Nigerian context—is that at no point was I asked "anything for us" or made to feel under pressure to offer a token of appreciation. The screening was conducted strictly as it should be: professionally, respectfully and without unnecessary delays. It may seem like a small thing, but experiences like this contribute significantly to passengers' confidence in an airport.
What I also appreciated was how seamlessly the security area fits into the overall design of the terminal. Rather than feeling like an afterthought, it is integrated into the building's bright, spacious and contemporary interior. The result is a security checkpoint that is not only efficient but also contributes to a pleasant departure experience, setting a reassuring tone before passengers make their way to the boarding gates.
Departure Waiting Area
By the time I reached the departure waiting area, the positive impressions I'd formed earlier had only grown stronger. The space immediately felt calm, spacious and immaculately maintained.
Rows of well-padded seats were neatly arranged with generous spacing between them, giving passengers plenty of room to relax without feeling crowded. Even with other travellers waiting to board, the area retained a comfortable, unhurried atmosphere.

What truly elevates the experience, however, is the expansive floor-to-ceiling glass wall overlooking the airside. It floods the waiting area with natural light and offers uninterrupted views of the apron, runway and jet bridges.
Like many aviation enthusiasts, I found myself spending more time looking out of the windows than at my phone. Watching aircraft movements while waiting to board added an extra layer of enjoyment to the journey. Combined with the highly polished flooring and clean finishes, the space feels bright, welcoming and thoughtfully designed.

One feature that particularly stood out to me was the dedicated charging desk and workstation. A long marble-effect counter is fitted with multiple UK-style three-pin power sockets, giving passengers a convenient place to charge their phones, laptops and other electronic devices while catching up on work or simply passing the time before boarding. It's one of those practical touches that can make a real difference, especially on international journeys where travellers often arrive early at the airport.

Taken together, the comfortable seating, abundant natural light and passenger-friendly amenities create a waiting area that is more than just a place to sit before a flight. It is a space where travellers can genuinely relax, stay connected and enjoy the anticipation of the journey ahead.
Boarding Gates
By the time boarding commenced, it was evident that the terminal's thoughtful design extended all the way to the departure gates. The atmosphere was calm and well organised, a welcome contrast to the crowded boarding areas that travellers often encounter at busy airports.
The gate itself features a sleek, white modular counter that complements the terminal's contemporary design. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls flood the space with natural light, creating an open, welcoming environment while offering uninterrupted views of the apron. Even while waiting for boarding to begin, there was always something happening outside to hold my attention.

Boarding for my Ibom Air flight to Accra was conducted through an aerobridge, adding a level of convenience and comfort that enhances the overall departure experience. Announcements over the public address system were clear and easy to understand. The airline's ground staff remained courteous and attentive throughout the process, ensuring that boarding progressed smoothly without unnecessary delays or confusion.
One detail I particularly appreciated was the simplicity of the gate area. At least during my visit, it wasn't cluttered with oversized advertising displays or unnecessary fixtures competing for attention. Instead, the clean architectural lines and expansive glazing remain the focal point, allowing passengers to enjoy the views across the apron as they wait to board. It is a subtle design choice, but one that contributes to a calmer and more enjoyable pre-flight experience.

For me, the boarding process summed up much of what I had experienced throughout the terminal: efficient operations, thoughtful design and an environment that places the passenger experience at the heart of the journey.
Other Amenities
Although I didn't have the opportunity to explore every part of the terminal before my flight, the facilities I did observe suggest that careful thought has gone into meeting the needs of different categories of travellers.

The restrooms, for instance, are easy to locate thanks to clear, well-positioned signage. Separate facilities are provided for male and female passengers, alongside a dedicated restroom for Passengers with Reduced Mobility (PRM). Its availability is particularly encouraging, reflecting a conscious effort to make the terminal more inclusive and accessible for passengers with reduced mobility.

Next to the PRM restroom is a family room—another thoughtful addition. While I wasn't able to step inside, its presence acknowledges the needs of parents travelling with young children and others who may require a private space before departure. It's a simple feature, but one that can make a meaningful difference to the overall passenger experience.

These may not be the headline attractions of a new airport terminal, but they are the kinds of practical details that travellers remember. Collectively, they reinforce the impression of a facility that has been designed not only to look impressive but also to serve its passengers with comfort, accessibility and convenience.
But No Duty-Free Shops Yet
One aspect of the terminal that still appears to be a work in progress is its commercial offering. During my visit, there were no duty-free shops, cafés or other retail outlets within the international departure area. While this did not take anything away from my overall experience, the lack of commercial amenities means passengers currently have limited options for shopping, dining or purchasing travel essentials after clearing security.
That said, this appears to be only a temporary situation. In a chat with George Uriesi, the Chief Executive Officer of Ibom Air, he revealed that the terminal's commercial spaces are expected to become operational in the near future. Once duty-free outlets, eateries and other retail concessions are introduced, they will not only enhance the passenger experience but also bring the terminal closer to the standards travellers have come to expect at modern international airports.
Final Thoughts
After spending a couple of hours at the new terminal at Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, I left with a genuinely positive impression. Passenger movement was orderly, queues flowed efficiently, and at no point did the terminal feel overcrowded or overwhelmed. What I experienced reflected an airport designed with passengers firmly in mind.
From the striking architecture and thoughtfully planned interiors to the intuitive signage, efficient processing areas and comfortable waiting spaces, every stage of the journey felt carefully considered. Rather than relying on grand gestures, the terminal succeeds through the accumulation of well-executed details that make travelling easier and more enjoyable.

What impressed me most was not any single feature, but how everything came together. Check-in, immigration, security screening and boarding all flowed naturally, supported by professional staff, modern facilities and a layout that encourages smooth passenger movement. These are the qualities that ultimately define a good airport—not just how it looks, but how it works.
Having travelled through airports across Nigeria and beyond, I can confidently say that the new international terminal at Victor Attah International Airport ranks comfortably among the best airport terminals I have experienced in Nigeria. It demonstrates that thoughtful architecture, efficient operations and a genuine focus on the passenger experience can transform what is often seen as a routine airport journey into a thoroughly enjoyable one.

As I boarded my flight to Accra, I couldn't help but reflect on how much Victor Attah International Airport has evolved. My first journey through its new international terminal wasn't simply memorable because it was an inaugural flight—it was memorable because the airport delivered an experience that exceeded my expectations.
For Akwa Ibom State, this terminal is more than a new building. It is a confident statement of intent and a gateway that reflects the state's growing ambitions in regional and international aviation. If my first experience is anything to go by, travellers passing through Uyo have every reason to look forward to the journey ahead.
