Delta Airlines has reached a milestone on its Atlanta-Lagos service as it carried its one millionth passenger at the weekend when a passenger, Gbemisola Abudu boarded the Atlanta-bound flight in Lagos.

Gbemisola was treated to a surprise recognition ceremony at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos involving Delta’s Sky Priority airport service, as well as a VIP celebration in Delta’s airport lounge.

Bobby Bryan, Delta’s commercial director for East and West Africa, met Gbemisola as she checked in for her flight from Lagos to Atlanta and presented her with a special celebratory gift to mark the occasion.

Currently, Delta is the only U.S. airline to serve Nigeria and will mark 10 years of nonstop service to Lagos in December. United Airlines had operated to Lagos from Houston, Texas but suspended operations last year.

In August, Delta announced that it would commence a new service to Nigeria with launch of a non-stop service between New York-JFK and Lagos beginning March 24, 2018. The new three-weekly service will complement the existing Atlanta-Lagos service.

Currently, Delta flies four times a week between Atlanta and Lagos using a Boeing 767 aircraft which will be upgraded to an Abirbus A330-200 with effect from 29 October, 2017.

Delta's Airbus A330-200 aircraft feature 34 lie-flat seats with direct-aisle access in Delta One, 32 seats in Delta Comfort+ and 168 seats in the Economy Class.

Delta Airlines commenced direct services between Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Atlanta and Lagos in 2007.
