New Daxing International Set to Become World's Largest Airport

October 28, 2017

If you are from Nigeria, you would already be familiar with the concept of 'made in China' which is the euphemism for substandard products. But Daxing International Airport, Beijing is nothing like the popular 'made in china' products. Yet, it is made in China.

Scheduled to open in September 2019, the new Daxing International Airport will become the world's largest airport and will boast of the world's largest airport terminal.

Located in Daxing District and parts of Guangyang District in Langfang, Hebei, located 46 south of city center on the outskirts of Beijing, the new airport is expected to serve Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei.

Construction work commenced in December, 2014 and on 30 June, 2017, work on the steel structure of the main terminal building was completed, marking a major milestone on the way to its opening in 2019.

With a projected cost of $13 billion, Daxing International Airport will have 7 runways, 78 gates, a hip capsule hotel and a transportation hub that will connect to both local and high-speed rail lines for easy transit to Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei.

First in the world to be designed by renowned architect Zaha Hadid, the terminal will be the world’s largest at 7.5 million square foot. At 6,600 acres, the airport will rank eighth in the world in terms of size.

The terminal design is innovative and will include a central hub with six curved spikes with walkways that connect to one point to make navigation within the terminal easier.

Once completed in 2019, Daxing International Airport will have capacity to handle 45 million passengers annually during the initial stages, rising to 70 million passengers by 2025. It will eventually be able to handle 100 million passengers annually making it the second world's busiest airport by passenger traffic.
