After a city-wide search for Johannesburg's ultimate pizza, authentic Neapolitan restaurant Settebello has been crowned the winner of 947's Best Pizza in Joburg competition.

Hosted by the station's popular breakfast show, Anele and the Club, in partnership with Old Mutual Insure, the search saw presenters Anele Mgudlwa, Frankie du Toit, Thembekile Mrototo and Cindy Poluta sample some of the city's most highly recommended pizzerias before naming Settebello the winner.

For co-owner Pino Di Benedetto, the recognition is particularly meaningful given Johannesburg's vibrant and competitive food scene.

He says the award is a tremendous honour because it reflects the votes and recommendations of 947's listeners. Rather than chasing trends, Settebello has always remained committed to authentic Neapolitan pizza, believing that quality ingredients, traditional techniques and consistency will always speak for themselves.

That philosophy has guided the restaurant since it opened seven years ago.

Using premium Italian ingredients, including Caputo flour, Ciao tomatoes and mozzarella from Puglia Cheese, every pizza is slow-fermented, hand-stretched and baked at high temperatures in the traditional Neapolitan style.

Co-owner Ramiro "Miro" Marques says the award also recognises the dedication of the restaurant's entire team. Every pizza reflects hours of preparation and craftsmanship, and the achievement belongs as much to the chefs, pizzaiolos, kitchen staff and waiters as it does to the owners.

The recognition comes at a fitting time, coinciding with celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of SSC Napoli, the iconic football club from Naples. Marques says the city is far more than the birthplace of pizza—it is the restaurant's inspiration, heritage and the heart of everything it does.

While Settebello now holds the title of Johannesburg's best pizza, Di Benedetto says the accolade is not a finish line but a reminder to continue preserving the traditions that have shaped the restaurant since day one.

The team also thanked 947, Anele and the Club, Old Mutual Insure, the judges, fellow finalists, loyal customers, suppliers and staff whose continued support made the achievement possible.

In a city renowned for its diverse food scene, Settebello's latest accolade is proof that authenticity, craftsmanship and respect for tradition remain the perfect recipe for success.
