South African Airways (SAA) has reaffirmed its commitment to transformation and to cultivating a workforce that mirrors South Africa’s diverse demographics across all spheres of its business, including the SAA subsidiaries.
SAA fully supports the sectoral targets introduced for the transport industry in April 2025. In alignment with these goals, the airline has implemented a long-term workforce strategy that includes targeted recruitment, training, mentorship, and skills development programmes, specifically designed to prepare women, black, coloured, and Indian candidates for cockpit and aviation operational roles.
As of 31 May 2025, SAA employed 204 airline pilots. Of these, 26.5% are black (12 female and 42 male), while 48% are white (22 female and 76 male). Among airline captains, 33.3% are black, and 24.2% are black among first officers.
Women across all cultural groups comprise 17.3% of SAA’s total pilot workforce, a number the airline is committed to growing through focused training and development initiatives. From a transformation perspective, SAA leads the national effort for demographic equity.
SAA’s pilots are responsible for flying thousands of passengers safely each day. This duty demands the highest levels of competence, skill, and training. For this reason, appointments to the SAA flight deck are and will continue to be determined by qualifications, experience, and merit, alongside the airline’s broader transformation objectives.
Beyond the flight deck, SAA employs more than 3,200 people, of whom 48% identify as female and 52% as male. The airline is proud of its average staff tenure of over nine years and its low turnover rate of 0.43%, underscoring a culture of loyalty, expertise, and institutional continuity.
Every member of the SAA team, from young learners to seasoned captains and senior executives, is valued and recognised for the professionalism, integrity, and dedication they bring to their roles.
The airline’s hiring practices reflect fair, inclusive, and merit-based recruitment, guided by national legislation, sectoral targets, and, above all, the imperative of operational excellence and passenger safety.
As part of its long-term development vision, SAA is broadening its pipeline of future aviation professionals through immersive and inclusive initiatives such as the ATO Aviation Orientation Programme, led by Captain Vusi Khumalo. By introducing learners aged four to twenty to the fundamentals of aviation, SAA is investing in a more diverse, skilled, and inspired generation of future aviators.
This initiative underscores SAA’s deep commitment to transformation, education, and nation-building. This week alone, SAA proudly introduced over 450 young learners in Johannesburg to the exhilarating world of aviation, igniting dreams and expanding horizons for South Africa’s next generation of pioneers. This program will run through the three-week winter school holidays.
