As the Highveld settles into its quieter, cooler months, the Spa at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff Johannesburg becomes the place to retreat this winter. A sanctuary of calm and enveloping comfort, the Spa opens the season with its newest signature offering: the Ubusika Ritual.
The Ubusika Ritual
Ubusika, the Zulu word for winter, gives this offering its name and its soul.
A carefully composed full-body treatment unfolds, designed to restore warmth, stillness and relaxation.
A deeply grounding back massage begins the ritual, easing tension with slow, intentional strokes. A restorative facial mask is then applied, allowing for quiet absorption while the body continues to unwind.
A soothing front-body massage follows, before a calming scalp massage brings it to a close: a final, considered touch that leaves guests fully reset, from crown to sole.
At its heart is an invitation to personalise. Guests choose from three West African organic shea butter blends, each crafted to reflect a distinct mood:
African Sunset. Mafura and shea butter infused with baobab, jasmine, geranium and lavender. Soft floral notes create a sense of calm.
African Daybreak. Mafura and shea butter blended with sweet orange and lime, for a bright, uplifting finish.
African Storm. Mafura and shea butter enriched with mongongo nut oil, baobab, fennel and ginger. A deeply comforting blend designed to revive and rebalance.
Available from ZAR 2,500, with extended options for those wishing to give the entire afternoon over to rest. The experience lends itself to two kinds of occasion: a private moment of reconnection, or a shared escape, with the Spa’s couples’ suite allowing two guests to be cared for side by side.
Lingering Awhile
In keeping with a true Four Seasons sensibility, the day need not end at the treatment room door. Guests are encouraged to arrive early and remain after, allowing the visit to unfold at an unhurried, indulgent pace.
The Spa’s relaxation area invites quiet retreat, with plush day beds, warming herbal teas, fresh-cut fruit and nourishing snacks crafted by the hotel’s culinary team. It is a rare kind of stillness, and one worth holding onto.
From here, the Spa’s facilities naturally continue the journey. The heated outdoor lap pool offers meditative lengths beneath the winter sun, while the steam room and sauna provide their own deep, enveloping warmth.
On bright Highveld afternoons, plentiful in winter, guests are invited to step outside, settle into the sunlight and ease into the pleasure of Après Spa.
Two Further Rituals
The Ubusika Ritual is one of three signature experiences awaiting guests this winter. Alongside it, the Spa offers two further rituals, each a complete journey in its own right.
Ubuhle Nokuphumula, a 240-minute half-day ritual, is an immersive escape from beginning to end. It opens with an apricot kernel and mafura butter exfoliation to stimulate circulation and soften winter skin, continues with an African Sunset body butter massage, and concludes with a deluxe manicure and pedicure: a seamless progression from first touch to last.
The African Traveller, a 90-minute treatment, offers a more invigorating contrast. It combines an energising full-body massage, using marula-herb infused body oils, with specialised cupping therapy on the back and legs to improve circulation and release built-up tension. It concludes with facial cupping for lifting, contouring and de-puffing, followed by a cool compress that leaves the skin refreshed and the body thoroughly revived.
An Overnight to Match
For those reluctant to let the visit end, an overnight stay at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff transforms the spa day into a complete seasonal escape.
Elegant rooms nestled into the hillside, panoramic views across the city, and mornings that arrive slowly through the gardens create a true sense of retreat. Here, time slows, and the only obligation is to begin the day entirely on one’s own terms.
