The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is organizing a three-day workshop on Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT), facilitated by the ICAO WACAF, from 6th to 8th October, 2025 in Abuja.
While describing the imperativeness of addressing CFIT risks in Nigeria and across the AFI Region as both urgent and continuous, the Director-General of Civil Aviation, Capt. Chris Najomo, represented by Capt. Solomon Ibinabo, General Manager, (Standards) at DOLTS, stated that the NCAA, through its State Safety Programme (SSP) and collaboration with airlines under their Safety Management Systems (SMS), is promoting proactive and predictive safety measures aimed at preventing CFIT occurrences.

This is in addition to domesticating it into the National Aviation Safety Plan, in line with ICAO's Global Aviation Safety Plan (GASP), thereby enhancing Nigeria's oversight capacity, strengthening regulatory frameworks and promoting the adoption of modern technologies such as Terrain Awareness and Warning Systems (TAWS), Performance Based Navigation (PBN) and robust crew resource management (CRM) training.
Therefore, the workshop provides excellent opportunity to share knowledge, build capacity and exchange best practices.

In closing, Capt. Najomo expressed appreciation to the WACAF office for its consistent support in strengthening aviation safety initiatives across the African region, describing the seminar as yet another demonstration of ICAO's commitment to ensuring that States, service providers, operators, and stakeholders alike continue to work together to reduce the risk associated with flight operations.
