KLM Reaches Deal with Pilots, Set to Operate 10,000 More Flights

KLM and Pilot union VNV have reached a comprehensive preliminary agreement. The arrangements made will enable KLM to staff pilot positions adequately, increase revenue, and thereby strengthen its financial position. It is expected that over 10,000 additional flights can be operated, allowing millions more passengers to reach their destinations.

Under the agreement, pilots will work one extra day per month during the summer season of 2026. Additionally, KLM will be allowed to schedule pilots to work one extra day per quarter during their weekends.

With this agreement, pilots are investing in KLM’s future, which is positive news for all employees of the company. Revenues are set to receive a significant boost in the coming years, enabling progress toward achieving sustainable and solid operational results.

The agreement ensures that KLM will be able to quickly staff pilot functions again. Specific arrangements regarding pilot training make this possible. Additionally, mandatory simulator training and exams can now be scheduled by KLM during pilots’ weekends, creating flexibility to respond swiftly to market opportunities.

Temporary measures have also been agreed upon to bridge the gap until all positions are filled. For example, pilots will work one extra day per month during the summer of 2026 to support flight operations, and special arrangements have been made regarding vacation days for that summer. This is expected to result in over 10,000 additional flights, allowing KLM to transport millions of extra passengers.

In return for this significant investment in the company’s future, pilots will receive appropriate compensation. For instance, the existing scheme allowing pilots to travel at a discount once a year will be made permanent.

Agreements have also been made to enable KLM to efficiently introduce the Airbus A350, allowing this quiet and fuel-efficient aircraft to be deployed promptly upon delivery.

Part of the agreement includes the installation of extended beds in the pilot rest area, specially designed for tall Dutch crew members. This will allow the A350 to be used on the longest routes within KLM’s network.

VNV and KLM jointly acknowledge that the agreements made represent an important step toward a healthy future. The preliminary agreement will be presented to VNV members for approval in September.
