IATA Launches Aviation Safety Workshops Under Focus Africa

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has launched a new series of Safety Training and Capacity-Building Workshops aimed at strengthening aviation safety standards across Africa.

Delivered under the Focus Africa Collaborative Aviation Safety Improvement Program (CASIP), the monthly workshops and webinars will equip aviation safety professionals with practical tools, technical guidance and industry best practices to enhance safety management systems and operational performance across the continent.

"The all-accident rate for Africa stood at 7.86 accidents per million sectors in 2025. While this represents an improvement over the continent's five-year average of 9.37, it remains significantly higher than the global average, underscoring the need for continued action.

Through the CASIP safety workshops, we are bringing together the expertise of industry partners to encourage knowledge sharing and provide safety professionals with practical tools and best practices that will help strengthen safety performance across Africa," said Kamil Alawadhi, IATA's Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East.

The programme was officially launched earlier this month with an in-person Safety Management Systems (SMS) Workshop in Nairobi, Kenya, supported by Boeing, Kenya Airways and the International Federation of Air Line Pilots' Associations (IFALPA).

• September: Space Debris Awareness Webinar

• October: Runway Safety In-Person Workshop

• November: GNSS RFI Awareness Webinar

CASIP is a collaborative initiative bringing together IATA and key aviation stakeholders, including the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC), the African Airlines Association (AFRAA), the Airlines Association of Southern Africa (AASA), Airbus, Boeing, Brussels Airlines, the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO), the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Federation of Air Line Pilots' Associations (IFALPA) and Kenya Airways.
