Delta Suspends Flights Between New York and Lagos

It appears that the recent crisis rocking the Nigerian aviation industry are far from being over. Delta Air Lines has suspended its flights between New York- JFK and Lagos with effect from 4 October, 2022.

The airline disclosed this development in a statement issued on Monday, saying that the route suspension was to fit into “the current demand environment.”

According to the statement, Delta will, however, continue to operate its nonstop service between Lagos and Atlanta.

The statement read, “Delta is suspending its nonstop service between New York-JFK and Lagos to fit the current demand environment. The airline continues to operate service between Lagos and Atlanta and offers onward connections to New York and other cities across the United States.

“Customers impacted by our suspended New York-JFK to Lagos service will be re-accommodated on Delta operated flights or services operated by our joint venture partners. Delta remains committed to the Nigeria market.”

Although Delta didn't mention it, the suspension of Lagos-New York flight might not be unconnected with the recent forex crisis in Nigeria as well as trapped foreign airlines funds.

It'll be recalled that Delta resumed service between New York-JFK and Lagos in December, 2021. The nonstop service currently operates three times a week using an Airbus A330-200 aircraft.
