Following the establishment of a new visa regime, nationals of all countries traveling to Rwanda will get visa upon arrival without prior application starting from 1 January 2018.

First announced in November, 2017, the new visa policy is part of the recent Rwandan Cabinet resolution allowing all visitors to receive a 30-day visa upon arrival in the East African country.

The move, which is set to increase Rwanda's openness and accessibility to the rest of the world, is part of a new visa regime.

Nationals of all African countries traveling to or transiting through Rwanda obtain an entry visa upon arrival without necessarily making prior application and pay $30 for a visa where applicable.

Previously, only African passport holders and a few other countries could receive Rwandan visa on arrival.

The new visa regime will also see Rwandans living abroad with dual nationality use their IDs on entry, waiving visa fees for Rwandans coming into the country traveling on foreign passports.

Previously, Rwandans traveling into the country on a foreign passport were only granted visa free entry only if they were in possession of a valid Rwandan passport.

The new visa regime will also enable foreign residents in the country use their resident ID cards for entry. Previously, they had to produce their passports on entry into the country.

Rwanda is a landlocked East African country with a green, mountainous landscape. Its renowned Volcanoes National Park is home to mountain gorillas and golden monkeys.
