Arik and BA Lead in Flight Delays and Missing Luggage

Arik Air is in the news again but for the wrong reasons as it topped the list of airlines operating in Nigeria in flight delays for October and November operations.

According to data from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Arik Air in October and November 2016, operated a total of 438 international flights out of which 307 (70%) were delayed.

In the two months under review, Arik also had 190 cases of missing and/or delayed luggage and the highest number of complaints of baggage pilferage and discourtesy.

British Airways took the lead in missing luggage among the major international airlines operating in Nigeria with a total of 81 cases of missing and/or delayed luggage. Air Côte d'Ivoire came second with 71 cases.

On the domestic front, Arik Air also led the table with a total of 3,024 flights out of which 2,096 (69%) were delayed. The airline cancelled a total of 81 flights and made two air returns.

Air Peace came second with a total of 1,878 flights out of which 1,167 (62%) experienced delays with only two cases of flight cancellation.

Dana Air operated a total of 1,093 flights with 740 cases of flight delays and 11 cancellations. Azman Air operated 679 flights, had 555 delays and 11 cases of cancellations.

Medview operated 657 flights out of which 436 were delayed while only two flight were cancelled. Overland operated 360 flights with 259 delays and 15 cancellations while FirstNation Airways operated 317 flights and recorded 97 delays and 5 cancellations.

In all, Nigerian Airlines operated a total of 8,004 flights in October and November, 2016 with 5,346 (67%) cases of flight delays and 127 cases of flight cancellations.

On the international scene, 26 airlines operated a total of 2,433 flights out of which 1,089 (45%) were delayed while there were 24 cases of cancelled flights.
