Hong Kong Threatens to Ground South African Airways Flights

South African Airways (SAA) says there is nothing irregular about a request from Hong Kong for the carrier to submit regulatory documents.

Sunday Times is reporting that the national carrier has been given until early next month to submit its annual financial statement or face deregistration.

If SAA fails to meet the deadline set by the Hong Kong registrar of companies on 6 September, it has threatened to ground all flights to that country.

The airline had requested a R5 billion bailout which Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan declined.

SAA spokesperson Tladi Tladi says contrary to the report, he believes the airline will meet the deadline and flights will not be affected.

“We interact with all licensing and regulatory authorities from time to time where they raise issue about information that is outstanding. As far as the matter relating to Hong Kong is concerned, it is receiving attention.”
